----- Keep Calm and Say What? -----

I guess I really have been living under rock because it's been confirmed by these posters that has gone viral for sometime. "Keep Calm and Carry On", the message passed on from King George VI, were hand painted war posters of the British Ministry of Information during WWII when they were attempting to encourage its citizens to keep their heads up during history's most tremendous suffering. As the war ended, these posters were rolled up and stored away, mostly disposed, except for two copies. It was not until a store keeper found them, and from there, it blew up into a mass produced phenomenon. See them on mugs, towels, notepads, thermos, paper bags; anything you can think of; milking as much as it can lasts. Nostalgia is often the perfect formula to draw attention, and money. This classic typographic design has unfortunately become clichéd. Overused and ubiquitous to the point it is mocking itself. Parodies are drawn up everywhere. I decided to join the bandwagon and made a parody of my own.

During my online film trailer watching escapades on iTunes, I found these movie posters, done in a very Saul Bass style, even concluding whether the old man himself designed them. Alas, couldn't find the original culprit who had created these for the Rolling Road Show festival where "famous films play in famous places" across the U.S. I really adore them, even if it happens to rip-off or idolize Saul's style but I think we live in new age where ideas are trite in a split second because, alas, someone has already done it. Being unique is an incredible exertion especially in the internet era where herds are standing-by readily to massacre ideas down to its bones. Creativity mutates and evolves like a virus. They come and go, often, they'll revisit. Look at fashion; look at music, and the culinary arts; when have we never borrowed or been influenced by our creative past? What matters most is how the person execute them and what purpose do they serve.
Anyway,
Have you seen Catch Me if You Can? Remember the opening credits? So pretty...

Here's a comparison of a Saul Bass poster to demonstrate the resemblance.

Perhaps its due to my favoritism for this show that has me liking their graphic posters for the upcoming season 3 (June 13, baby). Graphic design is essentially about the amalgamation of text and images. Selecting the type of font and colour contributes significantly towards the overall feel and objective of a product. An example here shows how feelings and humor can erupt from the inner with a few simple, but proper, combination of words and image to reflect the show's premises, which are likely to be understood only by its viewers—that is the most important.
